Jeff's dad, George Mills, 12 years old, on bow sprit of the family's sailboat, "The Amigo," on one of their many trips to Catalina Island. (1934) George, returning home during WWII and surprising his father, Gordon "Felix" Mills, just before the taping of his "Silver Theater" radio show. (1944)

~George Mills~

George is the original "Mr. Fix-it!" He can do just about anything. Not only can he fix things but he can create things. In the movie, "Six Days and Seven Nights," Anne Heche asks Harrison Ford if he is one of those guys with "skills." As she put it, "One of those guys if you give him a pocket knife he can build you a shopping mall." Well, George is one of those guys with skills! To list his creations would be too space-consuming but one of our favorites is when he designed and built a hi-lo type travel trailer from the axle up. With the push of a button, it automatically lowered and raised and the interior was made to look like a boat with beautiful mahogany trim and other nautical touches. It was an engineering marvel and always attracted attention wherever they traveled. The picture below was taken at Joshua Tree National Park on its "maiden voyage."

I think the poem below beautifully captures the essence of the type of father that Gordon Mills was, and his son George Mills, and his son, Jeff Mills, still are.

A father is neither an anchor to hold us back
Nor a sail to take us there
But a guiding light
Whose love shows us the way

Jeff and Jessica, 1979

To Jeff, from Darylynn

When Jeff and I were married 31 years ago, I knew he would be a great husband. What I didn't know is how great a father he would be. He is the best! Like his father, George, Jeff is a bit of a "Renaissance Man." He has diverse talents and interests. He loves rock music- The Who, Elton John, but also loves classical music and he can't bar-b-q without "reggae."
He loves CART racing, but he's always happy to take me to the finest restaurants for a gourmet meal. He likes action movies but never complains when we see a "chick flick."
Jeff loves being a Fire Captain with the LAFD, but he also loves working around the house...he truly is a "jack-of-all-trades!" He likes mowing his own lawn- no gardeners for him. He can cook, fix cars and repair just about anything that goes wrong in the house. However, I must add: Jeff + =
In addition to all these wonderful qualities, the thing that Jeff excels most at is being a dad. He is loving, patient, kind, understanding and fun. The best proof of what a great dad Jeff is are the two wonderful young adults that our children, Justin and Jessica, have become and the love and respect that they have for their father.

Thanks, Julie!
